Our featured coffee for December is a rich and full coffee from the Western Ghats mountain range in Southwest India. The cup starts with a touch of spice on the tip of the tongue, and then rich notes of chocolate truffle bloom on your palate. The chocolate carries into the middle of the cup and is complimented by green notes of plantain. The finish has notes of fresh fig, which fade into the long chocolate and plantain aftertaste.  This coffee is thick and heavy-bodied like a coffee from Sumatra and shines at this medium-dark roast color.

Roast Color: Medium-Dark

Cupping Notes: Chocolate Truffle, Plantain, Fig

About the coffee of the month: We feature a new coffee every month. This allows us to explore more of the world of coffee outside of our normal offerings. It is available this month only, while supplies last.

Story: If you think coffee from India sounds uncommon, wait until you hear about the Western Ghats mountain range where this coffee was cultivated. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse places in the world with more than 5,000 species of flowering plants and 508 different species of birds. The Neelakurinji flower is so uncommon that it only blooms every twelve years. The legends say that the Western Ghats mountain range is the location where the first cultivated coffee in India arrived, from seven raw beans brought from Mocha by a Sufi saint on a pilgrimage to Mecca in the 17th century. This lot comes from an estate in the Somwarpet region, which has 330 acres cultivated with coffee, oranges and peppers. The estate has its own mill where coffee cherries are sorted, depulped, fermented, washed and then dried on patios.

Delicious

This is among the best of the coffee of the month or reserve coffee I have tried in terms of my taste. A lot of them have this toastiness many people seem to cherish, and I dislike This doesn’t - very flavorful without bitterness or excessive sharpness. I think it could have some more sharpness and will add some Sumatra. Great find!
